Purpose

KERA is enthusiastic about mainstreaming intelligence-driven decisions as the foundation for initiating transformative community-led and people-centric change across vulnerable communities.

Aim

We aim to bridge the gap between science-policy-sustainable ecosystem restoration solutions. Additionally, we champion evidence-driven rights-based programming in the design and implementation of our programmes.

Operationally, we intend to initiate either farmer-led and/or village-led restoration of degraded ecosystems through the adoption of circular economy-based approaches on degraded privately owned lands. An alternative approach (involving corporate entities, registered community-based associations and/or organizations) is proposed for degraded publicly owned lands.

The third approach is focused on empowering community-led eco-preneurship and green economic development by supporting local producer and marketing cooperative societies, youth-led and women-led SMEs, and tertiary student-led ventures, all modeled on offering nature-based solutions contributing to mitigation and adaptation for the fight against climate change and benefiting biodiversity conservation.

To be a global benchmark for mass multi-sector collaboration and locally led solutions for practical landscape restoration, public education and advocacy, and restoration science research.

Mission

To work together with diverse stakeholders to systemically restore Kenya’s ecological functionality and build community resilience.

Main Objective

To support locally-led ecosystem and ecological restoration across vulnerable rural areas and indigenous communities for enhanced environmental, social and economic outcomes.

Specific Objectives

(i) To increase ecosystem restoration awareness, knowledge sharing and advocacy at the community and county levels for enhanced capacity development.

(ii) To promote mosaic transformational climate-smart, regenerative and ecosystem-based practices that strengthen the resilience of crop production systems for smallholder farmers across vulnerable rural areas and indigenous communities.

(iii) To strengthen the organizational capacities of community-led, community-owned, community managed producer and marketing cooperative societies, and youth-led and women-led enterprises offering nature-based solutions.

(iv) To entrench cross-cutting issues into our programming activities; by supporting equitable access to social and cultural services, enhanced gender transformative approaches, management of the indigenous peoples biosystems technical knowledge and facilitation of societal transformative thinking in the natural resource management sector.

(v) To strengthen KERA’s operational and financial sustainability with a functional and sustainable business model that is based on realistic market assumptions for effective and efficient on-the-ground implementation of her programming activities.
