Prosopis 4 Good

This is a KERA led multi-stakeholder program (MSP) pioneering a comprehensive systems approach that integrates ecological, social and economic strategies for sustainable Prosopis management and utilization. These three interconnected dimensions address the diverse priorities of stakeholders forming a cohesive governance framework.

To achieve these objectives at both programmatic and project levels, KERA is fostering a horizontal collaboration by integrating resources and technologies from the government, local communities, private sector actors, academia, nongovernmental organizations and development partners. The programme seeks to transform Prosopis juliflora from an invasive threat into a valuable resource creating a co-designed value chain for eco-friendly, socially inclusive, and economically sustainable management.

With the technical assistance of the Good to Nature (GtN), the programme has operationalized three multisector and transdisciplinary teams with distinct mandates: the Ecological Team, the Social Team, and the Economic Team who draw action plans for a holistic implementation roadmap. KERA, Bio-Logical and County Government of Tana are jointly implementing a biochar and biochar-based biofertilizer project that seeks to systematically eliminate Prosopis juliflora, reclaim degraded and Prosopis infested land, restore the soil health and convert the lands into farmlands, grasslands, and other recommended sustainable land management and use in line with various climate adaptation strategies.
